Reesie Cup, 12 Gauge Claim Sheepskins
A couple of noteworthy former Buckeye standouts finally finished up their undergraduate work and graduated on Sunday along with several current student-athletes.
Former OSU quarterback Cardale Jones, who helped Urban Meyer’s gridders capture the 2014 national championship, and ex-basketball forward George Reese were among the 18 current and former Ohio State student-athletes to receive their degree at summer semester commencement at the Schottenstein Center on Sunday.
While Jones and Reese were known as key contributors to highly successful teams, some of the more recent student-athletes helped contribute to a second place finish in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for the 2016-17 year.
J.T. Blubaugh was a captain on the 2017 NCAA runner-up men’s lacrosse team. A Columbus native, he ended his career as the program’s all-time leader in games played (69) and did not miss a game in his four years with the squad. Gabriel Domecus was a three-year starter for men’s volleyball, including the back-to-back national championships and All-America recognition.
Nikki Walts will be a four-year letter winner for the Ohio State women’s soccer team. Through her first three seasons, the 2016 assistant captain has started 63 career matches, scoring 11 goals and dishing out 13 assists. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native was a second team All-Big Ten pick in 2016 and a member of the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2014.
Reese helped Jim O’Brien’s 1999 basketball team reach the Final Four and the Columbus native also was a key performer for the 2000 Big Ten co-championship team. He received his degree in sociology as part of Ohio State’s degree completion program.
