Haskins’ Record Day Leads To Yet Another B1G POW Award
Dwayne Haskins came up just 3 yards shy of a school record with 455 passing yards against Indiana on Saturday. Still, given the difficulty the OSU defense had in the game and that Haskins tied a program record with six touchdown passes, his performance arguably is as impressive as any for a Buckeye quarterback.
At the least, it was good enough for Haskins to be named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week – an award he has claimed for a third consecutive week and a fourth time overall this season.
The redshirt sophomore completed 33 of 44 passing attempts to amass 455 yards in the air. Art Schlichter set the school mark of 458 yards in a 1981 win over Florida State.
Haskins’ 33 completions tied a school record set by J.T. Barrett and his 462 yards of total offense also is a school record, eclipsing Barrett’s 423 vs. Penn State last year.
In the 49-26 win over the Hoosiers on a balmy day in the Horseshoe, Haskins threw two TD passes each to Parris Campbell and Terry McLaurin and one apiece to Johnnie Dixon and Binjimen Victor. That brings his total at the halfway point of the regular season to 25 touchdown passes, which leads the nation. That compares favorably to just three interceptions.
Haskins is the first Big Ten quarterback in history to have three games with at least five touchdown passes in one season.
His fourth Big Ten Offensive POW honor this season moves him into rare air and within reach of the Big Ten record for offensive player of the week honors in one season. The record is held by OSU’s Troy Smith, who earned the honor five times during his Heisman Trophy-winning season of 2006.
